So that would mean that the digital format converter that I will purchase would need a Firewire (or iLink) connection also. At least my Sony camcorder does have the 's' video connections. So I would need to get that cable also from that camcorder to the digital format converter. Do you recommend using another camcorder as a pass through as some suggest? I found this list below of analog to digital passthrough camcorders on line but I am not sure which camcorder is better than others to do the job of converting my Hi8 tapes from my camcorder. Maybe I could find a reasonable one on eBay.
Or get the converter mentioned in the first link I sent above instead? The important thing about buying another camera, and I thought you did not want to spend too much money on this project, is to ensure that it will play your existing tapes. Without that capability it does not matter if it meets all the other requirements. You don't need the 'S' Video cable.
You would be using the A/V out section of your existing camera. You should already have that cable. Hi Sorry if I misinformed you but what the other camcorder would function only is as a pass through. Meaning, how others described it as you hook up your own camcorder that plays the Hi8 tapes directly to that camcorder that can convert the signal as a pass through.

Verified purchase: Yes Condition: Pre-owned. Nice Consumer-Grade, Lacks A/V In & LAN-C Edit Control Digital-8 is far superior to miniDV in terms of reliability, because it's physically bigger.
Its ability to record digitally on either Hi8 or standard 8mm videocassettes is a huge plus. Size of camcorder is also very nice. On the minus side, its lack of line-input recording capability renders it useless for archiving video onto Digital-8 from other sources. Also, its lack of LAN-C edit control makes it unable to be controlled by Sony editing VCR's and other edit-control devices. Very nice for run-of-the-mill consumer-grade use, but falls short where enhanced features are required. Will not play back analog Hi-8 tapes I purchased this camcorder with the intention of converting our old Hi-8 tapes (from an analog camcorder) to the computer.
However, after having received it in the mail, I attempted to play the tapes on it, and the play symbol would show up, but there was no picture or sound. I read the manual, and did some online research, only to find that this camera will NOT play back tapes that are recorded in the analog format. Just thought this information might be helpful to someone, it sure would have been helpful to me.(The camera itself seems very nice, though, so for anyone who is not intending to convert analog tapes to digital, this would probably make a great camera).
