I have been getting this error in Software Update since MacOS 10.3 on the PowerPC G4. It usually downloads most of it (with iTunes 9.0 it gets to '53.8 of 85.5 MB'), then presents this error. +'A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.'
+ Repeating the install attempt, or using 'Download Only' command, repeats the same error, and it happens at the same point (53.8 MB in the case of iTunes 9.0). Other packages download okay. Internet connectivity is not an issue, in fact I'm re-trying it while I type this message. Oddly, the error has usually only happened with iTunes updates.
The only remedy I have found is to wait until the update is posted on the Apple website (Downloads area) and install it manually. You may ultimately consider performing an Archive & Install + Update if the associated issues behind the symptom you've noted continue. In the meantime, (I did re-read your post; that's why I edited that reply) have you tried getting the iTunes 9 update directly from Apple Support's iTunes/iPod page? Here is a direct link to that page's iTunes download: Apple Support iPod+iTunes iTunes download: Sometimes, in the system configuration and/or settings, you could be having an issue with some of the ISP supplied data stream and not all of it. When the system has issue with getting online, sometimes a browser such as Safari may not reach all the sites it could, too.
You could try to re-set or change the OS X Software Update's functional issues by using some of the suggestions online, this page has a few; there are others: How to reset Mac OSX's Software Update function: Good luck & happy computing! Here are more details about this bug, which I have been studying for a long time. This error also occurs in the Windows version of Apple Software Update, running on a Dell under Windows XP SP2. I don't have access to that system right now so I can't give the exact error message. Also, you can download the index-1.sucatalog file directly, then inspect it with a text editor to find the URLs of the 4.tar files that are part of the iTunes update, then paste the URLs into the Safari Downloads window. This method does not get around the problem: if the error happens in Software Update, it also happens when you try this method.
However, you get to find out which of the four files (CoreFP, iTunesAccess, iTunesX, and AppleMobileDeviceSupport) has the problem. However, I have found out in the past that I can get around the problem by taking my computer to someone else's internet access point and performing the software update there. I happen to be at my mother's house tonight, and using her wireless access (enabling the ad-hoc access point over Airport) I was able to get iTunes 9.0 via both Software Update and the.tar file method.
Based on this and other evidence, my theory in the past has been a protocol implementation error on Akamai's servers, obfuscated by inhomogeneous standards compliance in the various routers around the internet. However, that theory is a wild guess and is probably at least partly wrong.
You may ultimately consider performing an Archive & Install + Update if the associated issues behind the symptom you've noted continue. Like I said, the bug happens on clean, new systems. So I doubt archive+install will help. Besides, that is hardly a viable workaround for users. Yes, you've found the problem.
No I haven't found the problem - read the rest of the evidence in my messages. Some Software Updates work, while the iTunes update (and I mean about 80% of the instances in which iTunes has been updated for the last 3 years) does not. I have also seen the error on other networks including hotel wireless networks and other peoples' cable modems. What Brand/Model Modem & Router do you have?
What kind of connection? We have Comcast internet (and DSL too) with the Motorola Surfboard modem they were giving their new customers a few years ago.
Also a Linksys WRT54G and a BEFSR41, and the Apple Airport and Airport Extreme cards. The firmware in the Linksys equipment has been upgraded as much as possible (mainly out of security concerns, not because of this bug). All have been rebooted one or more times in diagnosing this problem.
These Modems have bizarre effects on Macs that may take months to show up. All Linksys Cable Modems,.
No. That discussion has to do with bandwidth issues, and is unrelated to the problem I am reporting. Using 'curl' from Terminal it is possible to measure the bandwidth during a download (look at the 'Average Dload' figure), and it is clear in such tests that the bandwidth remains at very nearly a constant level until the moment the file gets to the point where the error is (we're at iTunes 9.0.0 right now, and the error occurs at 52740096 bytes in iTunesX.tar. That's 51504 times 1024 bytes). Then, the transfer stalls, but other simultaneous downloads proceed as normal (actually they speed up, because they no longer have to compete with iTunesX.tar) Is it an SB5120?
I'm home again now so I have access to the equipment that you suspect. It's a SBV5220, on the back it says P/N 513936-007-00 and HWREV: 02 So that puts it in the group that you suspect, but you would need to present evidence that the Broadcomm problem causes outright stalls in TCP connections. Thanks for writing again. I know you're doing your best. Sometimes, the suitable remedy IS to get different hardware when certain issues over three years point to a certain set of problems with the electronics inside a box. As I said (see above) it also happens on hotel wireless networks and friends' hard-wired setups. So unless you think that they all have the same defect, or maybe those different networks recognize ME somehow?
(-: I also said I've seen it on different Macs. 4 Macs in all so far, plus one Dell running the Apple Software Update that comes with iTunes for Windows. So you can't just tell me to get a new Mac, either, because I've gotten 3 new Macs. Perhaps to see if you can add to one of his forum posts, as a question, then refer back to this forum thread. I think you're thinking along similar lines to BDAqua's suggestion of persuing the reports of other symptoms coming from hubs and routers. Not scientific enough. If someone else isn't getting error -1001, then it's a different bug.
Everyone with a Mac does Software update, unless they bother to figure out how to shut it off, so if this is happening someone will find this topic. I don't even want iTunes 9 yet, so I'm not sure why this bothers me so much. I should just tell Software Update to ignore iTunes. The only time I use Software Update is to get otherwise hard to find Java updates when I do a completely new install of an older OS X and need to built it up from scatch; then these progressive updates (like, 6? Of them) which aren't easily found as 'stand-alone updates' in Apple Support's Downloads page, are items I look for via Software Updates. This includes sometimes looking for any updates that may be interesting for my computer that may not be in the list at Apple Support Downloads.

Then I go there to see if I can get the standalone version for all my Macs. And third-party known good software may offer their own prompts to get their newest versions; but I do not let anything automatically download nor do I let anything automatically install.
(I've had few issues with 140 Macs; having fixed cast-offs and donated many to charity organizations.) I have my Software Update in four Macs running 10.4.11 - turned off. That part is easy. I'd rather get the download manually and save the full deal to disc media for re-use (if never, that'd be good, too) or a Flash USB drive, so I won't have to run each computer online & have to waste bandwidth on the same exact - and sometimes large - files.
So, not all Macs require Software Update utility to be on to update or to download files from their source links at Apple Support Downloads. But, you have to be able to get to their servers via their site to do so. And if that is next to impossible, perhaps you may have to try a few different takes on troubleshooting your configurations of software in at least one computer, to see if there is a step below the recent update level where the computer will work properly and anywhere. If your portable computers work elsewhere, but don't when exposed to your local network or internet, with whatever sharing or setup you've got, then there is a real likelihood something in that grouping is messed up. Or, some software within your computers (third party? Extensions?) may be similarly messing up the connection to the internet anywhere you and the computer(s) may be, when they/you try using them online.
I appreciate all the time you spent writing this reply. Unfortunately, almost nothing matches the symptoms. The file (specifically ) transfers for 52740096 bytes (out of a total of 54794240) before stalling.
Also, the other 3 components iTunesAccess.tar, CoreFP.tar and AppleMobileDeviceSupport.tar transferred correctly. That rules out all the suggestions you've made that implicate the local system, except my hubs and routers, and I've ruled them out by observing the bug on hotel wireless networks and friends' cable modems. K Shaffer wrote: The Windows computing issue may have a slightly different problem; and though similar and in a shared environment, (.) NO, actually that proves the issue is with Apple's Software Update application, because it is the same bug in Windows and Mac versions of Apple Software Update, and both are implementing the same protocol and talking to the same servers. I suspect it is an improper cache proxy implementation in Akamai's network, and that Software Update relies on the TCP implementation (which has been stable for decades and is not intended to handle an improper implementation on the other end) to effect its transfers. When you build up an OS X from scratch (.) Never have.
I just buy a new Mac from the Apple store (or the website, in the case of my Dual G5) and take it home, and wait until Software Update tries to update iTunes, and sometimes I get this error. Is there any chance that your computing environment may have an issue with one of the bugs that messes up the DNS (.) What, only for the one file iTunesX.tar?!? How do you think that's possible?
Are you an engineer? I have actually implemented networking protocol stacks. Anyway, short of actually setting up a computer and doing something different with it (short of tying it up to a stake, and burning it) the others aren't going to be used for, and see if it can make a break from what- ever similarities afflicting the others, and note the. That would be a very scientific and thorough approach, but would be ignoring what we already know, which is that the problem is isolated to the Software Update code and its libraries (and specifically the parts that are shared with the Windows target) and/or the servers it is talking to.

The only time I use Software Update is to get otherwise hard to find Java updates (.) I might be a bit rare, I wonder how many Apple customers actually do leave Software Update turned on? The whole thing can be turned off in System Preferences very easily, but I've never done that. I just tried this transfer again today and I got the whole 54794240 bytes, so I guess the Akamai cache got flushed.
I've also seen that happen before, I think it was sometime before iTunes 8. So I'll probably have to wait until the next update of iTunes before gathering more on this error.
Message was edited by: Robert Munafo. What was the result of resetting the Software Update as per several posts & suggestions in the Discussions, when it does not work right? Some new computer owners, Mac owners, get a brand new computer and take it home, zero the hard disk drive, reformat the drive, and run bootable disk utilities on it and hardware tests, reinstall the OS X and build the system up from scratch. Some of these use Macs in small business where down-time is money lost to someone else.
So, it is not unheard of to troubleshoot a computer to see if there is a level beneath the current upgrade/update one where things work. But, you could check some of the Windows related posts in Apple Discussions to see this last spat of update items has some upset. Some of the items relate to new iPod features supported in iTunes and others relate to changes in how iTunes works; some downloads don't work at all, or some of the writers of those posts are sad to see changes that make using the software harder (in Windows!) Of course, some of the Windows user posts are from people who either have a dual-boot later model Mac running BootCamp or others who have native Windows based hardware using iTunes. Some of these issues may be similar, but the configuration of Windows OS and Mac OSX can require different answers. My replies don't take long; and I do invite anyone who has the best experience in both platforms to enter into this Discussion and if they know of another forum with more on this topic, to post the link to that site's related conversation and their ideas.
